Overview

This is an educational comparison for clients deciding between two permanent straightening approaches. The right choice depends on your texture, chemical history, goals, and maintenance routine.

At a Glance

The two, side by side.

Option A
Japanese Hair Straightening
Thermal reconditioning. Uses a thiol-based solution plus precise flat-ironing to permanently reshape bonds into bone-straight hair. Permanent on treated hair.
Option B
Relaxer
Hydroxide chemistry (lye or no-lye) that permanently reduces curl. A long-established method for textured and coily hair. Permanent on treated hair.
Similarities

What they share.

Differences

How they differ.

Longevity

How long each lasts.

Both are permanent on the hair they treat. Japanese straightening regrowth is typically touched up around every six months; relaxer new growth is touched up every several weeks to a couple of months.

Maintenance

What upkeep each needs.

Both rely on treating new growth only and never overlapping. Both need gentle, balanced home care. Relaxed hair in particular depends on moisture and protein balance and regular trims.

Hair Type

Hair type considerations.

Relaxers have a long track record on coily and very textured hair. Japanese straightening suits many natural textures after assessment but is generally not advisable over previously relaxed or heavily bleached hair. Very coily hair needs honest evaluation either way.

Good Fit For

Which is right for you.

If your hair is already relaxed, Japanese straightening is usually not an option, and a healthy relaxer routine is usually the better option. If your hair is virgin and you want bone-straight permanence, Japanese straightening may suit you. The safest answer comes from a consultation that looks at your actual hair, history, and goals. There is also a broader safety conversation around chemical straightening that is worth discussing openly during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Japanese straightening better than a relaxer?
Neither is universally better. They use different chemistry and suit different hair. Relaxers have a long history with coily hair; Japanese straightening gives bone-straight results on suitable hair but not over relaxed hair. The right choice depends on your hair and goals.
Can I switch from a relaxer to Japanese straightening?
Not directly. The two chemistries are incompatible on the same hair, so previously relaxed hair generally cannot take Japanese straightening until it grows out. We assess this honestly at the consultation.
Which lasts longer?
Both are permanent on treated hair. The difference is regrowth timing: Japanese straightening touch-ups are roughly every six months, relaxer touch-ups every several weeks to a couple of months.
